O’Leary look at Christmas TV adverts
That time of year is upon us again – it’s time for all the department stores, supermarkets, brands & beyond to fight for the top spot of the Nation’s Favourite Christmas TV Advert 2016!
But before we are wowed by the onslaught of inevitable adorable animations, festive feels or cracker joke comedy let’s look back at some our favourite adverts from Christmas past.
- John Lewis
From animated bears & hares to lonely penguins, John Lewis never disappoint when it comes to Christmas adverts and even has a scheduled time in the TV guide for its first showing. Our favourite though, from all the classics has to be last years “Man on the Moon” – where the department store teamed up with Age UK and shared a touching take on looking out for loved ones at Christmas.
- Irn Bru – Snowman
First on our screens in 2007, this hilarious Scottish twist on the classic tale of the Snowman is a stroke of genius from Irn Bru and repeated every Christmas without fail. “Now I’m falling through the air. I wonder where I’m going to land. He nicked my Irn-Bru and let go of my hand.” – we dare you not be signing this all day!
- Sainsbury’s – Mog’s Christmas
Hailed as the “most successful supermarket Christmas ad campaign ever”, the tale of a Children’s favourite was brought to life in this 3 minute ‘advert’ by Sainsbury’s. The advert was such a success that Sainsbury’s sold books telling the story of the Cat at Christmas in stores across the UK.
- Coca-Cola – Holidays are coming!
A Christmas staple since 1995, you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t say “You know it’s Christmas when…” when this advert pops back up on our TVs. It’s magical jingle and excited child are synonymous with Christmas in the UK and a favourite year after year.
Bring on the 2016 candidates!
